Elon Musk’s recent announcement regarding the Tesla Roadster’s capabilities has drawn attention from various quarters, including Bugatti’s CEO.
Musk’s Bold Claims
Last week, Musk took to X, formerly Twitter, to reveal Tesla’s ambitious new goals for the upcoming Roadster. Among these targets is the aim to achieve acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in under one second, potentially setting a new world record.
Feasibility According to Bugatti CEO
Mate Rimac, CEO of Bugatti Rimac, weighed in on the feasibility of Musk’s claims. Rimac noted that achieving such rapid acceleration is technically possible, citing his own company’s electric sports car, the Nevera, which set a record of 1.71 seconds for the 0 to 60 mph sprint last year.
Considerations and Challenges
While acknowledging the possibility of achieving such speeds with thrusters, Rimac highlighted potential drawbacks. He pointed out that rapid acceleration could result in the release of air within a few seconds, leaving behind cumbersome equipment that adds dead weight to the vehicle.
Thrusters as a Viable Solution
Despite the challenges, Rimac suggested that thrusters remain the most viable option for achieving lightning-fast acceleration. He dismissed alternative methods like suction fan technology as impractical due to the Roadster’s weight and the significant equipment required.
Tesla’s Response and Previous Claims
Musk did not provide detailed information on how the Roadster would surpass existing records, stating only that acceleration was “the least interesting part.” Tesla did not offer further clarification on the matter.
Previously, Tesla had advertised the Roadster reaching 60 mph in 1.9 seconds, a figure that remains on the company’s website. Musk indicated that production design for the second-generation Roadster is finalized, with plans for an official unveiling by the end of the year and production slated to begin in 2025.
Conclusion
While Musk’s claims have sparked excitement, they also raise questions about feasibility and practicality. As Tesla continues its pursuit of groundbreaking innovation, the automotive world eagerly awaits the unveiling of the highly anticipated Roadster.
