Goodnotes Expands into Productivity Sector with Acquisition of Dropthebit

London-based notetaking startup Goodnotes has announced its acquisition of South Korean startup Dropthebit, the developer of the meeting and video summary tool Traw. This acquisition marks Goodnotes’ strategic move beyond the realm of education into the realm of productivity tools for professionals.

The Acquisition Deal

As part of the acquisition, all three co-founders of Dropthebit will join the Goodnotes team. While Dropthebit’s Traw tool is set to shut down in February, existing customers will have the opportunity to export their data. Dropthebit, founded in 2020 and backed by $1 million in funding, initially launched a whiteboard solution in 2022. The tool, designed to record activities during lectures or meetings and summarize them into documents, later shifted its focus to meeting summarization and integrated an AI-powered tool for organizing YouTube videos.

Strategic Synergy

Steven Chan, founder of Goodnotes, expressed admiration for Dropthebit’s work even before the acquisition discussions began. He noted that Dropthebit’s multimodality aligned well with Goodnotes’ vision, ultimately leading to the decision to acquire the company. With over 24 million monthly active users, Goodnotes has primarily served students with its digital notebook solutions since its inception in 2011. However, with the introduction of Goodnotes 6 in August 2023, the startup expanded its offerings to include a digital marketplace for planners and subject-specific revision notes, as well as paid education modules.

Expansion into Productivity Sector

The acquisition of Dropthebit signifies Goodnotes’ foray into the productivity sector, targeting professionals beyond the education realm. Traw’s features, including video analysis and Excel integration, hold promise for segments such as investors and market researchers. Goodnotes plans to leverage Traw’s capabilities to enhance its transcription services and integrate support for YouTube and internal videos. Additionally, the startup aims to develop Large Language Model-based features for enhanced user engagement.

Future Outlook and Growth Strategy

Goodnotes envisions becoming a “paperless digital notebook” for professionals, facilitating deeper insights from meetings and documents. While the startup has primarily focused on stylus-based handwritten notes, it is enhancing its typing experience to accommodate various notetaking methods. In addition to the Dropthebit acquisition, Goodnotes invested $1.9 million in Korea-based digital stationary startup WeBudding in September 2023. Despite its growth and strategic expansions, Goodnotes does not plan to raise further funding in the near future, prioritizing user experience and product development.

Alfred S. Chuang, General Partner at Race Capital, expressed optimism about Goodnotes’ expansion into the productivity space, highlighting the Traw team’s talent and expertise in AI and engineering. He emphasized the importance of maintaining user experience as Goodnotes navigates new use cases and integrates its offerings into enterprise workflows.
