Assessment of Democratic Oversight
Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has criticized her party’s utilization of its Senate majority, emphasizing the need for more assertive oversight measures. Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the House oversight committee, expressed concerns that Democrats have not effectively wielded their 51-seat majority in the Senate, particularly in utilizing oversight tools. In an interview with Brian Beutler, author of the progressive Off Message newsletter, Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the underutilization of Senate gavels and the lack of awareness among the public regarding the party in Senate majority.
Challenges and Partisan Dynamics
Ocasio-Cortez attributed the hesitancy in Senate oversight to the institution’s inclination towards bipartisan comity and perceived “clubbiness,” contrasting it with the more contentious atmosphere in the House. Despite gaining full control of committees and subpoena issuance capabilities with the expanded majority post-2022 midterm elections, Democrats have shown reluctance in adopting a more confrontational approach. Ocasio-Cortez underscored the importance of challenging this inertia, advocating for a more aggressive stance in addressing critical issues facing the nation.
Senate Judiciary Committee’s Role
Highlighting the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee’s actions under Senator Bernie Sanders’ leadership, Ocasio-Cortez commended efforts to hold pharmaceutical company CEOs accountable through subpoenas. However, she urged Democrats to extend such oversight to the Supreme Court, emphasizing the significance of exploring issues like dark money and abortion rights through hearings and subpoenas. While the Senate Judiciary Committee has initiated steps to subpoena conservative figures like Leonard Leo and Harlan Crow, the enforcement of these subpoenas faces hurdles, including the 60-vote threshold and Republican opposition.
Urgency of Aggressive Oversight
Ocasio-Cortez criticized the perceived inadequacy of Senate efforts in addressing ethics issues within the Supreme Court, attributing it partly to the filibuster rule. She called for a more proactive approach, emphasizing the potential of oversight and hearings to bypass legislative gridlock and address critical concerns directly. Ocasio-Cortez warned against ceding ground in the oversight battleground, urging Democrats to leverage their majority to effect meaningful change and hold powerful institutions accountable for the benefit of everyday Americans.
