Elon Musk Declines Donation to Trump’s Campaign

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk clarified his stance on political contributions, stating that he would not be donating to either presidential candidate, as reported by The New York Times following Musk’s meeting with former President Donald Trump in Florida.

In a post on X, Musk emphasized, “Just to be super clear, I am not donating money to either candidate for US President.”

Musk’s decision not to donate doesn’t come as a surprise, considering that despite his significant wealth, he has never been a major donor in American politics. However, Trump’s meeting with Musk coincided with his efforts to secure campaign contributions.

Presently, President Joe Biden’s campaign maintains an advantage over Trump’s, with the former president relying on political action committees to finance his legal expenses.

Musk, who admitted to voting for Biden in the 2020 election, has been critical of the president. Last year, when asked if this meant he would support Trump in the next election, Musk remained non-committal, stating, “I would not vote for Biden. I’m not saying I’d vote for Trump.”

The recent decision by former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley to suspend her campaign further solidifies the nominations for both major parties, although voting is ongoing in some states.

Looking ahead to 2024, aside from Trump and Biden, third-party candidates are expected to emerge, including vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Musk previously hosted an audio chat on Twitter featuring Kennedy during his time as a Democratic presidential candidate.

Correction: March 6, 2024 — An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Nikki Haley suspended her campaign on Tuesday. It was suspended on Wednesday.
