Colombia’s government has announced plans for a deep-water expedition to explore a 300-year-old shipwreck in the Caribbean believed to contain gold, silver coins, emeralds, and other treasures estimated to be worth $20 billion.
The Legendary Galleon
The ship in question is the San José, famously dubbed the “holy grail of shipwrecks.” The 62-gun, three-masted galleon sank in 1708 after encountering an English squadron while on its way to Cartagena. Laden with riches plundered from Spain’s colonies in South America, the San José carried 116 steel chests brimming with emeralds and millions of gold and silver coins.
Groundbreaking Expedition
Colombia’s government is investing approximately $4.5 million this year alone in an ambitious archaeological exploration of the historic wreck. The first phase of the scientific research will involve surveying the deep waters surrounding the shipwreck, utilizing advanced technology to gather crucial data.
Advanced Technology
Oceanographer and navy Rear Adm. Hermann León Rincón revealed that the expedition would employ submerged robotic technology, a navy vessel, and cameras to meticulously track movements. The wreckage lies at a depth of 600 meters (about 2,000 feet), requiring sophisticated equipment for exploration.
Legal and Diplomatic Disputes
The discovery of the San José in 2015 sparked legal and diplomatic disputes over its rightful ownership, involving the US, Colombia, and Spain. Sea Search Armada, an American investor group, claims rights to 50% of the estimated treasure, alleging discovery of the shipwreck in 1982. The Colombian government has initiated arbitration litigation with the firm.
Cultural Exploration
Despite the potential monetary value of the treasure, Colombian officials emphasize the expedition’s cultural significance. Archaeologist Carlos Reina Martínez highlighted the expedition’s goal of uncovering the lives of the 600 individuals aboard the galleon before its tragic demise. Minister of Culture Juan David Correa reiterated that “History is the treasure.”
Expedition Launch
The Colombian expedition is scheduled to launch in the spring, contingent on weather conditions. The endeavor represents a significant step in unraveling the mysteries of the San José and preserving Colombia’s rich maritime heritage.
