A significant majority of Americans express worry about their ability to cover expensive medical bills in case of emergencies, and this concern is influencing their economic perspectives, potentially impacting the upcoming presidential election.
Healthcare Costs a Priority for Voters
According to a survey conducted by KFF (formerly Kaiser Family Foundation) from January 30 to February 7, 80% of voters, irrespective of their political affiliation, deem it “very important” for presidential candidates to address healthcare costs during their campaigns. The survey, comprising 1,309 adults, highlights that unexpected medical bills rank among the top financial worries for three in four adults. Additionally, voters identify prescription drug prices, out-of-pocket medical expenses, and The Affordable Care Act (ACA) as key factors influencing their voting decisions in the 2024 election.
Bipartisan Concerns on Healthcare Costs
The survey indicates that concerns about healthcare affordability resonate similarly across party lines. Over 70% of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents identify general healthcare costs as their primary financial stressor. This shared apprehension likely stems from the escalating healthcare expenditures, with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services projecting a 5.5% annual increase in healthcare spending through 2031. As per KFF data, one in six insured adults deferred medical care due to costs last year, and over 20% postponed filling necessary prescriptions. Moreover, approximately 40% of adults carry some form of medical debt.
Divergent Views on Presidential Candidates’ Healthcare Efforts
Despite concerns about healthcare costs being bipartisan, opinions diverge on the effectiveness of President Biden and former President Trump’s approaches. While 90% of Democratic voters credit Biden for addressing healthcare costs, 91% of Republicans believe Trump did more during his tenure. Biden’s initiatives, such as the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, negotiations with pharmaceutical companies to reduce drug costs, and expansions of Medicare and Medicaid, are notable achievements. Biden’s support for the ACA, a policy preferred by the majority, underscores his campaign messaging on healthcare access. Conversely, Trump advocates for repealing and replacing the ACA, a stance echoed by Republican voters, although many lack confidence in his proposed healthcare plan.
