Cost Analysis of the 10 Largest Universities in the US

Attending a large university involves expenses beyond tuition fees, encompassing various factors such as housing costs and other living expenses. The cost of education can significantly vary depending on the institution and its location.

Overview of Costs

Data compiled by the US Department of Education reveals that the average annual cost of attending the 10 largest universities in the US stands at slightly over $17,000. However, this figure spans a wide range, from approximately $6,200 to just under $29,000.

These large universities are situated across different regions of the country, with a notable concentration in the southeastern United States. Notably, Florida hosts two of the top 10 largest universities.

Understanding the Metrics

The Department of Education’s “college scorecard,” updated in October, provides valuable insights for prospective students, allowing them to compare various factors such as cost, admissions, completion rates, and post-graduate earnings. The data pertains to the 2020-2021 academic year and enrollment in the subsequent year.

The average annual cost, termed as the average net price, encompasses tuition fees, books, supplies, and living expenses after factoring in scholarships and other forms of financial aid. Notably, the cost for public schools reflects fees for in-state students.

Breakdown of Costs

When considering in-state tuition and mandatory fees alone, the average among the 10 largest universities, including one private institution, hovers around $12,400. For the nine public universities in this cohort, the average is approximately $11,250. In contrast, out-of-state tuition and mandatory fees for these public institutions average around $31,300, representing a significant disparity.

Methodology

The analysis excludes institutions primarily offering online education and private for-profit schools. Moreover, the focus is on universities primarily granting bachelor’s degrees or higher.
