OpenAI has unveiled a new feature for ChatGPT that enables the AI chatbot to read its responses aloud to users, providing enhanced accessibility and convenience.
Voice Feature Integration
Announced on Monday, the voice feature allows users to listen to ChatGPT’s responses, catering to individuals with accessibility needs and those multitasking or on the move. Available on both iOS and Android apps, as well as the web version, users can activate the feature by tapping and holding ChatGPT’s response and selecting “Read Aloud” on the app or finding the option below the response on the web.
Accessibility and Convenience
The introduction of the voice feature aligns with OpenAI’s commitment to enhancing accessibility and user experience. By offering an audio option for responses, ChatGPT accommodates individuals with visual impairments or those in situations where reading text is not feasible, such as while driving or exercising.
Context Amid Scrutiny
OpenAI’s announcement of the voice feature coincides with heightened scrutiny of the company following legal action initiated by cofounder Elon Musk. Musk, along with his lawyers, has accused OpenAI of deviating from its original mission as an open-source nonprofit and instead prioritizing profit maximization for Microsoft, its major partner.
Lawsuit Allegations
In Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI, CEO Sam Altman, and president Greg Brockman, allegations suggest that the organization has transitioned into a closed-source entity serving Microsoft’s commercial interests. The lawsuit raises concerns about OpenAI’s focus on refining artificial general intelligence (AGI) for profit rather than advancing it for societal benefit.
Response from OpenAI
OpenAI has not issued a formal response to the lawsuit, but CEO Sam Altman has posted cryptic messages on social media, possibly alluding to the legal matter. Despite the ongoing legal dispute, OpenAI continues to innovate, as evidenced by the recent introduction of the voice feature for ChatGPT.
As OpenAI navigates through this period of scrutiny, its commitment to technological advancement and user accessibility remains steadfast, with initiatives like the voice feature demonstrating its dedication to enhancing user experience and inclusivity.
